Floating Euphoria and the Theta State

Slowing your brainwaves with flotation therapy

Sensory deprivation has many physical and mental benefits, but perhaps most interestingly,  it can slow down your brain waves until they reach whats known as the ‘theta state‘.

This state is most common during deep meditation or just before falling asleep. It is known to induce vivid imagery, clear and creative thoughts, sudden inspirations and feelings of happiness and euphoria.

Some people report spiritual experiences, deep inner peace, and feeling as if they were reborn.

While in our sensory depravation tanks, your body fully relaxes, blood pressure decreases, the release of endorphins increases, allowing your brain to operate at a significantly decreased frequency leading to Theta.

Types of Brainwaves

The human brain produces five kinds of brain waves, which operate at different speeds.

Your brain tends to produce theta waves when you’re sleeping or dreaming. They tend to occur when you’re drifting off to sleep or just before you wake up. Theta brain waves can also occur when you’re awake and in a very deeply relaxed state of mind.

BETA WAVES (12-38HZ)
These are the brainwaves that are present in our normal waking state of consciousness. This is the level characteristic with an engaged mind, such as a person in conversation or actively ‘doing things’. We are alert, attentive, and focused during Theta.

ALPHA WAVES (8-12HZ)
These brainwaves occur during quiet thoughtful moments. Alpha is the resting state for the brain. A person who has just finished a task or is taking a time out, maybe taking a walk in the park is usually in an alpha state.

THETA WAVES (3-8HZ)
Theta brainwaves occur when sleeping or daydreaming. A person driving who cannot recall the last 10 minutes can be in a theta state. It is also the dominant brainwave in meditation. People tend to think with better clarity in this state of mental relaxation and are prone to a flow of ideas. Theta is a very positive mental state which is also active during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and even hypnosis.

DELTA WAVES (.5-3HZ)
Delta Waves occur in the deepest meditation and in dreamless sleep. Delta waves suspend external awareness and are the source of empathy. Healing and regeneration are stimulated in this state, and that is why deep restorative sleep is so essential to the healing process.

The Secret to Brain Heaven: The Theta State

When you go to bed and read, you are generally in low beta. When you close our eyes your brain will enter alpha, then theta and finally, when in a deep sleep to delta.

Theta waves only occur while you are awake but in a very deep, relaxed state of mind. A state that could be referred to as “autopilot.” Whilst in this meditative state, the brain empties all unnecessary thoughts.

Theta brainwaves occur between the conscious and subconscious world. Theta waves are the dominant frequency in healing, learning, creativity, memory recall, intuition, memory retrieval, and encoding new memories into thoughts. In theta mode we lose sight of the external world and focus on ourselves. In this dreamlike state we see vivid imagery, and thoughts from beyond the conscious level.

Many scientists and psychologists suggest that a float session can be a powerful tool giving access to the power of your subconscious mind, and can promote spiritual healing and growth.

Benefits of Theta include:-

  • Deep relaxation of mind and body
  • Anxiety/stress reduction
  • Mind and body healing
  • Increase creativity
  • Lowers heart rate
  • Increasing intuition
  • Connection to subconscious mind
  • Ability to program the unconscious mind
  • High levels of creativity and problem solving
  • Improved emotional connections with self and others
  • Increase spiritual connection
  • Increase emotional connection

Theta for meditation

Zen meditation masters practise for years to achieve the theta state. Current research shows that people who float can achieve this state much more quickly and effortlessly.

Will Theta make me feel euphoric?

There are no guarantees, but many people claim that flotation therapy causes feelings of overwhelming happiness and euphoria. They have also experienced an increase in feeling more optimistic and an increased well-being.

About 30 minutes into a float, the real miracle happens. Almost uncontrollably, your brain switches from beta waves to theta waves – the same waves one experiences during sleeping and dreaming. Theta waves are the dominant frequency in healing, high creative states, memory retrieval, and encoding new memories into thoughts.
